What’s next for Energy Star?

The popular energy efficiency program would be axed under President Trump’s budget plan. Here's how the construction industry might be affected.

Energy Star is a widely recognized energy efficiency program, but it's one of dozens of programs that would be cut in President Trump’s proposed budget, reports Grace Hood at NPR. "Critics of Energy Star say the government should get involved in the marketplace only when absolutely necessary," Hood reports. "But that argument doesn't hold sway for the program's legions of supporters, which span nonprofits, companies and trade groups." The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy, for instance, has joined about 80 other nonprofits and companies in a letter to Congress urging it to keep the program.

If Energy Star is shut down, some builders may turn to programs like LEED for Homes or the National Green Building Standard. In all three programs, high-efficiency propane furnaces and water heaters can play an important role in saving energy and achieving certification.
