Outdoor Living Areas Gaining Popularity

With autumn quickly winding down, now is the time that consumers start thinking about how to extend their outdoor living season. Outdoor living areas are gaining popularity with homeowners and potential homebuyers. According to an American Institute of Architect's Home Design Trends Survey, the percentage of homeowners who have a finished outdoor room rose from 35 percent in 2005 to 42 percent in 2008. Furthermore, outdoor rooms are increasingly becoming the go-to spot for family gatherings, celebrations, and even weeknight relaxation. Sixty-four percent of homeowners report spending more time in their outdoor living spaces than they did in 2005.

As homebuyers continue to seek out smaller homes, they are looking for ways to expand their living space outdoors. The 2008 Home Design Trends Survey also took note of this trend: "Despite a downsizing of home sizes and general concerns about keeping housing costs affordable, residential architects note the growing interest among households in improving their properties, even as lot sizes continue to shrink. At the forefront is the growing movement toward outdoor living." The survey noted that this trend can mean anything from constructing traditional outdoor elements like decks, patios, and pools to creating a true outdoor room complete with a fully functioning kitchen, luxurious outdoor furniture, and a built-in fireplace.

As demand for custom outdoor living rooms increases, homeowners and prospective homebuyers want convenient solutions for their outdoor design needs. When designing, building, or remodeling an outdoor living area, look to propane energy for gas applications. Propane can be used for everything from the typical outdoor grill to professional-grade cooktops. It can also warm patio floors, heat pools and spas, warm patio areas, and keep backyards insect free. Propane can be used in almost every outdoor application to create a comfortable, versatile space for your customers.
