10 useless energy-saving tips (and 11 good ones!)

Don't listen when someone offers you this "energy-saving" advice.

Blogger Martin Holladay dived into the depths of the Internet to find common energy-saving tips that you can safely ignore. For instance: Fill your half-empty refrigerator or freezer with plastic bottles filled with water. "This stupid tip will never save you enough energy to show up on your electric bill," Holladay says. In a sidebar he offers some real energy-saving advice, such as No. 6: "If your refrigerator, furnace, or air conditioner is old, swap it for a new, high-efficiency appliance."
