Generators

Propane generators are powerful enough to protect even large homes and businesses, providing insurance against power disruption.

In the past 10 years, the demand for electricity has increased exponentially due to population growth and the increased use of power-thirsty devices such as computers and flat-screen TVs. For homeowners in many areas, this has resulted in electrical service outages that disrupt home comfort. While most of these outages last 20 to 30 minutes, a J.D. Power and Associates study put the average extended power outage at eight hours.

A standby generator can ensure a homeowner's quality of life by keeping the electricity flowing in the event of a power failure that results from either a standard service disruption or a natural disaster, such as a storm. A standby generator can even serve as a primary energy source for homes built off the main. Cogeneration, or Combined Heat and Power (CHP) units are now available that produce heat in addition to electricity.

Propane standby generators are housed outside, usually adjacent to a carport or other non-living space. Often air-cooled, they draw energy from the home's propane storage tank.

Commercial standby power generation

Most businesses can't afford any downtime from a power outage. While storms, unpredictable weather, and unreliable power grids create an uncertain supply of electricity, propane-fueled standby generators provide insurance against power disruption — and the lost revenue an outage can bring. They can also protect critical systems, including security, refrigeration, safety lighting, automatic doors, and IT systems.

In the past, commercial standby generators were typically powered by expensive diesel systems. Today, manufacturers offer a number of affordable, propane-fueled standby generators that are powerful enough to serve a variety of commercial building sizes, with capacities up to 400 kw.

Backup for renewable energy

Premium generator sets are designed to work in tandem with off-grid renewable energy power generation technology. Energy-efficient propane generator sets can be easily combined with solar, wind, or other renewable energy resources to create reliable, environmentally friendly hybrid energy systems for residential and commercial off-grid applications. Financial incentives for these systems are available for construction professionals and their clients. Learn more about propane rebates and incentives.

Portable generators

Propane portable generators can provide power for construction crews working on sites not yet connected to the power grid. In such cases, you'll need a generator that can run for as long as 50 hours a week and provide enough power to run chop saws, circular saws, compressors, and other tools. Portable propane generators are powerful enough to meet jobsite demands, and they have some additional advantages. For example, they can be easier to store and use. Because propane does not degrade over time like gasoline, the fuel supply is more stable and reliable. Plus, there's no spillage when refueling.

As part of its mission to support research and development of new propane technologies, PERC has partnered with Generac to bring two multipurpose portable propane generators to market.
