For this luxury resort, propane provides big-time energy for big-time attractions including a water park.
Located in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, Massanutten Resort has long attracted visitors to its 6,000 acres of woods, water, and mountains. While golf and skiing have always been core pieces of Massanutten's appeal, the ownership team knew they needed to broaden its amenities to make it a true four-season destination.
But big-time attractions such as a water park and spa require considerable energy to operate. While the resort's owners discussed extending a natural gas line located two miles away, it quickly concluded that propane was the better option.
"Because our resort is so large and spread out, the cost of regularly adding connections to a natural gas line would have been prohibitive," says Mike Shiflet, physical plant director for Massanutten Resort.
